A Guide to Understanding Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis water filtration system under a kitchen sink.

Reverse osmosis (RO) describes a process where pressure forces water through a semi-permeable membrane to create treated water, known as permeate, and reject water, called brine or concentrate. The goal of installing a reverse osmosis system is to remove water contaminants, like lead, arsenic, bacteria, viruses, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Reverse osmosis systems are commonplace in homes and businesses.

How Does Reverse Osmosis Work?

When you install a reverse osmosis water filter, you’re effectively purifying your water to separate the water molecules from other substances. Your reverse osmosis water system will retain the solute on the pressurized side of the membrane and distribute the purified solvent, or reverse osmosis water, to the other side.

The most common use of a reverse osmosis water system is for turning seawater into drinking water, or RO water, but homeowners also use it to purify municipal tap water or well water.

Most RO systems consist of these components:

  1. A sediment filter for trapping particles, including calcium carbonate and rust
  2. A secondary sediment filter for trapping smaller pores and particles
  3. An activated carbon filter for trapping chlorine and organic chemicals
  4. A reverse osmosis membrane
  5. A UV lamp to sterilize surviving microbes
  6. A secondary carbon filter for trapping surviving chemicals

Depending on the reverse osmosis filter system you buy, a cellulose triacetate (CTA) membrane can be in place of a carbon pre-filter.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Types

Reverse osmosis drinking water can offer much-needed peace of mind. A quality filter system can purify your water by removing impurities and even help it smell and taste better! If you’ve started thinking about installing one to enjoy these benefits for yourself, it’s a good idea to explore the different residential types so you can purchase the right one for your needs.

Countertop RO System

A countertop reverse osmosis water filter is a free-standing system that sits on a surface, such as your countertop or the ground. It can be a great alternative to an under-sink model when you don’t have much space under your sink.

Countertop RO systems are compact, easy to install and maintain, and you can take them with you to future properties. However, they take up precious counter space and can also take longer to filter water.

Under-Sink RO System

Out of all home reverse osmosis systems, under-sink models are the most common. They consist of a pre-filter, RO membrane, post-filter, and storage tank. You can install them under your sink and enjoy straightforward water filtration at the turn of the faucet.

These models are easy to use, can filter plenty of water, and are easy to maintain. However, they can be harder to install than a countertop unit and produce more water waste.

Tankless RO System

Technology is changing all the time, and reverse osmosis is no different. You can now buy RO systems with no tanks to save space. They filter water on demand, are more compact, often boast a faster flow rate, and can come with a booster pump. A booster pump can increase a system’s overall performance by increasing the water pressure and enhancing the efficiency of filtration.

Whole-House RO System

Not everyone wants to sacrifice bench space or use valuable storage space underneath their counters. In that case, consider a whole home reverse osmosis system. Your preferred plumber can install them at the point of entry to your home to provide filtered water to all areas.

While large, they can remove salt, chemicals, and other impurities from the water delivered to your faucets and showers.

Do I Need a Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System?

Wanting to enjoy cleaner and safer drinking water in your home or business may mean you decide to research different water filtration methods. Reverse osmosis filtration is a worthwhile consideration if you:

  • Want your water to taste better: Chlorine and other contaminants can create unwanted smells and tastes. Reverse osmosis filtration can improve the taste of drinking water.
  • Have concerns about contaminants: The potential for water contaminants can depend on where you live and whether your property has municipal tap water or well water. If you have concerns about contaminants, such as sediment, heavy metals, or chlorine, a whole home reverse osmosis system may help.
  • Live somewhere with contaminated water: If you know the water in your area has high levels of nitrates or other pollutants, a reverse osmosis water filter may be able to filter them out.

Reverse Osmosis Water Benefits

With multiple water filtration options available, it’s only natural to be unsure about the best system for your household or business. There can be many benefits associated with reverse osmosis systems, including:

  • Contaminant removal
  • Reduced exposure to harmful substances
  • Eliminates chlorine and chloramine
  • Improves the taste and odour of your water
  • Saves money – no more bottled water!
  • On-demand quality water supply
  • Softens hard water – you can enhance this benefit by installing a water softener.
