There's nothing like the convenience of watching wastewater swirl down your drain, never to be seen again, to make us appreciate the convenience of modern plumbing—but when your drains are moving slowly or not at all, it can feel like you're back in the dark ages.
Whether they're partially or completely blocked, clogged drains are more than just an irritating nuisance. If neglected, they can develop into much bigger plumbing nightmares such as sewer backups and burst pipes that are costly and time-consuming to repair. However, traditional drain cleaning methods such as pipe snaking and chemical cleaners aren't completely effective and can even cause further damage to your suffering pipes.
The answer to your wastewater woes is HydroScrub® jetting, a long-lasting clogged drain solution that is far superior to old-fashioned methods. But why are your pipes clogged in the first place? What makes this revolutionary drain cleaning service so great? And, um... what is it, anyway? We'll answer those questions and give you six reasons why Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Edmonton's HydroScrub® jetting is the superior way to get your sewer lines in like-new condition and keep them that way.
What is HydroScrub® Jetting?
In the HydroScrub® jetting process, high-pressure jets of water are used to blast away residue buildup that is blocking the flow of water through your pipes, clearing out everything from hard mineral deposits to soft deposits of grease, roots, and other debris that got washed down the drain.
A HydroScrub® jetter consists of a high pressure pump and a very long hose with a nozzle on the end. There are different nozzles for different jobs, but they are basically designed to use the high pressure water to clean the pipes from the inside by spraying off all the sludge, grease, roots, and whatever else might be down there. These nozzles are so powerful they can cut through a 2x4! There are different HydroScrub® jetter sizes available for different jobs, but the largest we offer operates at up to 4000 psi. . For comparison, water pressure coming out of your faucet is typically around 60 psi.
What Causes Clogged Drains?
If they don't receive regular maintenance and cleaning, pipes will eventually become clogged over time through normal use. However, drain line blockages are usually expedited by excessive buildup from things that were improperly disposed in bathtubs, showers, or sink drains.
Technically, the only thing that's supposed to go down your drain is water and soap suds, though you can get away with some types of food scraps if you have an in-sink garbage disposal. But in reality, many more damaging substances are washed away down wastewater pipes. Here are a few things Mr. Rooter's professional plumbers often discover blocking dirty drains:
Clumps of hair
Mineral deposits from hard water
Solid food items, such as egg shells
Soap scum & shampoo residue
Q-tips & cotton balls
Paper towels & wet wipes
FOG buildup (fat, oil, and grease)
Small items like toys & bottle caps
Other debris from household items
Cast iron scale (corrosion from the pipes themselves)
Dental floss
Just for fun, here are some odd things that we’ve found to name a few:
Cell phones
Old sewer snake cables
Golf and tennis balls
Toy train complete with locomotive and caboose!
Stuart Little’s red convertible
A fidget spinner
Car keys
False teeth
Lots of pickles for some reason
And lastly, a toy shark that a toddler wanted to “set free” 😂
6 Reasons HydroScrub® Jetting is the Best Way to Clean Drains
Is HydroScrub® jetting really that much better than other cleaning methods? In short—yes it is! Here are six ways it's superior to conventional processes such as snaking and chemical cleaners.
1. Most Effective and Efficient
Conventional snaking methods can work well for some types of blockages, but are completely ineffective for others. Often after the snake has gone through the material that has been scraped off of the walls of the pipe struggles to wash down the drain and may still cause issues. HydroScrub® jetting breaks up and blasts away all the buildup, leaving the inside of the pipe clean and free of debris, so they won't need service as often.
2. Versatile Solutions
Many people think HydroScrub® jetting is just for routine maintenance of commercial buildings, but that's not the case. It's a versatile cleaning method that can be safely and effectively used on both residential and commercial properties, for preventative maintenance or emergency drain cleaning.
3. Prevents Damage
Don't have a clog and want to keep it that way? HydroScrub® jetting is the ideal way to maintain your household pipes. Mr. Rooter's preventative maintenance techniques will keep the wastewater flowing away from your home and avoid the serious damage that can be caused by neglected drains, such as sewer system and drain backups. It'll also extend their lifespan so you don't have to deal with the hassle of pipe replacement.
4. Environmentally Friendly
The harsh chemical drain cleaners and solvents that are often used to unclog pipes can make their way into waterways and groundwater, damaging the natural ecosystem. Since HydroScrub® jetting only uses pressurized water, it's much kinder to the environment and helps protect our flora and fauna.
Saves Money
The cost of HydroScrub® jetting is generally higher than the cost of other clog-clearing methods such as snaking, but it's still more cost-effective in the long run because it works so much better. In fact, snaking needs to be performed four times more often than jetting on average, so you'll have a plumber visiting your home or business far less often with jetting. You'll also save a lot of money by preventing future drain issues that can cause costly water damage, and avoiding the need for expensive pipe rehabilitation.
