Frequent Septic System Problems

  • Collapsed Baffle: If you notice solid waste in your soakaway system and liquid waste backing up in your home, your septic tank may have a collapsed baffle (barrier).
  • Old Age: Besides being less efficient than new models, old-style septic tanks are often more likely to need repairs for breaks and clogs.
  • Tree and Plant Roots: Service professionals are often called to properties when septic tank systems are damaged by tree and plant roots growing into septic tank walls and pipes.
  • Poor Maintenance: If regular septic tank system maintenance isn’t on your priority list, your property is at risk of consequences like contaminated groundwater, a broken septic system, and sewage backing up
into your home.

  • Waking up in the morning to find our main sewer drain backed up was not the way I was expecting to start my day. However Mr. Rooter came through big time! Their representative on the phone was a big help, and sent a plumber out right away. The plumber Chad, was incredible. He came in and fixed the problem and it took him perhaps less than an hour. He was here in and incredibly timely fashion and was polite, straight to the point and was all around just amazing. I can’t thank him enough and wanted to emphasize how incredible he was. Thanks Chad and Mr. rooter for all your help!! Service: Sewer repair

  • When I called to make an appointment the gentleman that answered asked, “how can I make you smile today?” Which I thought was a great greeting, especially having come home from vacation to a leak! He cheered me up! The next morning the lady who called to notify us of our appointment time was also friendly, accommodating and understanding! The plumber, Chad, showed up on time and greeted us very professionally! He was very knowledgeable and super friendly! He took the time to explain every little detail and answered all of our questions patiently and in terms that we could understand. When he diagnosed the problem he gave us all of our options with various price points and never made us feel Obligated to choose any specific option or to even have the work done by him. We went ahead and had the work done by Chad and he did it quickly, carefully, and ensured we were happy with it before he left! He definitely fixed the problem and even went above and beyond with how he treated and in our home! He was very clean and respectful of our property. Never once did he wear his shoes in the house without covers and he even cleaned my bathtub after he was done working on it. We have nothing bad to say about him he is fantastic all around! I will definitely call him back specifically To have work done! I have to say, both Mr. Rooter and their sister company Birnie Plumbing and Drains have fantastic employees and work ethic! Thanks again Chad! Services: Plumbing leak repair, Plumbing leak detection

Frequently Asked Questions About Septic System Repair in Glen Williams, Ontario

Read our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ to gain insight into what to expect from septic tank repairs. If you’d like to learn more about our plumbing services or how to take care of your septic system, contact the team at Mr. Rooter Plumbing® in Glen Williams, Ontario.

  • Who you hire to complete septic tank replacement, where you live, and your specific property type all contribute to the costs of the job. The different components of septic systems contribute to their overall price tag, such as various pump types like sewage ejector pumps, grinder pumps, and septic lift stations. Different septic system types cost different amounts, such as conventional septic systems versus advanced ones like chamber, advanced secondary treatment systems, and tertiary treatment systems. If you only need to replace a small septic tank on your property, you may pay less for it than you would if you needed to buy a larger one.

  • There is no one-size-fits-all fee type for septic tank repairs because all repair types are different, which means that service providers charge different amounts. As a general rule, you pay less to remedy minor septic tank issues compared to major ones since minor problems typically take less time and parts to manage. Septic tank repair professionals all set their own labour rates and charges, so the business you choose for the job determines your overall repair bill. How easy it is to access your septic tank can contribute to your overall repair bill, with septic tanks that are in hard-to-reach locations typically costing more to repair than those that are more accessible.

  • Think about your septic tank’s maintenance history and how well you’ve cared for it – these factors contribute to how long it will last. In Canada, you can expect your septic system to serve your property for 20 to 30 years, but it could even last 50 years or more. Some septic tank materials are better quality than others and contribute to their longer lifespans – concrete tanks typically last much longer than steel ones. Many factors contribute to the average or expected lifespan of a septic tank, such as your area’s soil type, whether your water table is high or low, and how careful you are with using it.

  • Look for signs of disturbance on your property that indicate a septic tank underneath, like ground depressions, strange vegetation growth, signs of disturbance and extra-healthy grass. New homeowners aren’t always aware of where their septic tanks are, so review any information left by the former owner along with inspection records. If you have access to the building plans for your property, you may discover the septic system’s location has been marked on them for convenience. When you can’t seem to locate your septic tank, don’t forget that septic service businesses have access to helpful equipment to assist in the search.

  • As soon as you realize that your septic tank has collapsed, contact a reputable septic system business since the collapse can cause health and safety concerns with raw sewage leaks. Your septic tank needs to work at its best to take care of wastewater treatment and disposal, but as it can’t do this when it has collapsed, avoid using it until it has been fixed. Collapsed septic tanks should be taken care of as soon as possible since they can cause property damage as well as sinkholes that pose a safety risk. There’s a chance you can get into trouble with your local municipality if you use a collapsed septic tank – many rules and regulations exist.

  • Routine septic system pumping with the help of a trusted service provider is the best way to take care of your septic system and help it function at its best. Septic tank care can generally be as straightforward as understanding what you should and shouldn’t flush and pour down your drains, like grease, oil, and personal care products. Don’t neglect drain field maintenance tasks, such as installing a sump pump and rainwater drainage system away from your drain field, not parking or driving on it, and not planting trees near it. Large volumes of water can drown a drain field, so be mindful of how much water flows into your septic system, and regularly inspect faucets and toilets for leaks.

  • Reach out to your local septic system service provider for help repairing your septic tank since they can provide quality repairs beyond your capabilities. Inlets and outlet baffles on septic tanks can fail, so you may need to replace the outlet baffle by installing a new plastic sanitary tee. You can replace a range of septic system components rather than opting for total replacement, like filters, pumps, alarms, and plumbing components. You need to be sure that any septic system repairs have been performed to a high standard, so don’t underestimate the value of system testing post-repairs.

  • If your septic tank is the victim of an accident like a fire, a weather-related issue, a falling object, or an electrical problem, your home insurance policy in Canada may cover the costs of repairs. Coverage for septic tank repairs is often included in homeowners’ insurance as a fraction of your total property limit, providing peace of mind for potential repair costs. You may not know whether your insurance company will cover septic tank repair costs until you read through your policy information and contact your insurance company to ask questions. If your septic tank damage is caused by pests, flushing oils and chemicals down your drains, neglect, a lack of appropriate drainage, or other examples of human error, neglect, and poor maintenance, your insurance provider may decline to cover the costs of repairs.

  • If you believe you have a clog in your drain field or a blockage in your pipes, you may find that your local septic tank service provider encounters these problems often and can take care of them. Despite being stressful and worrying for some property owners, cracks and leaks in septic tanks are commonly encountered issues, often caused by things like ground movement, pressure, and age. A lack of regular pumping and maintenance may cause common issues like the smell of sewage in your yard, wastewater backing up into your house, and slow drains. Problems can arise from drain fields that aren’t properly installed and septic systems positioned too close to trees, so it’s important to be aware of these issues.

  • It’s often possible for trusted and reliable septic system repair experts to fix a cracked septic tank using epoxy sealants when the cracks are reasonably minor. What your septic tank is made out of contributes to the possibility of effective repairs, such as concrete, plastic, or fibreglass. The easiest way to know whether your septic tank’s cracks are repairable is by contacting a business offering reputable septic tank services in your area. In some situations, septic tank cracks are so severe that no adequate repair options exist, and reputable septic tank service providers recommend replacement instead.
