What Is Hard Water?
When someone says they have “hard water,” that simply means that their water supply has a high mineral content—as opposed to “soft water.” Water can contain a high mineral content when it has contact with minerals in the soil; for example, when it percolates through limestone or chalk deposits. Hard water can have an unpleasant taste and smell, among other negative effects.
How Do I Know If I Have Hard Water?
Some of the most telltale signs of hard water include:
- Damage to dishes, glasses, and silverware; evidence of spots and smudges or “cloudiness” on glass that won’t go away
- Damage to skin and hair; causing dryness, itchiness, dullness, and difficulty cleaning
- Scale or built-up mineral deposits in bathtubs, sinks, showerheads, or on faucets
- Laundry that comes out dull, yellowed, or grayish; inability to wash clothes and produce vibrant color
