Common Septic System Problems

  • Collapsed Baffle: If your septic tank experiences a collapsed baffle (barrier), solid effluent can enter your soakaway system and cause blockages and liquid waste backing up in your home.
  • Old Age: While old tanks still function, they are less efficient than new ones and more likely to experience problems like breaks and clogs.
  • Tree and Plant Roots: You can experience severe septic system damage if roots from trees and plants grow into the walls and pipes of your septic tank.
  • Poor Maintenance: By not having a maintenance schedule in place for your septic system, you are at risk of having sewage backing up into your property, groundwater contamination, and septic system
problems.

Kris came to my house yesterday to help with diagnosing why I was having water/sewage in my basement. I think he was at my house in less than 30 mins after he returned my call. Explained the process and the potential pricing (depending on what he found after step 1, could’ve gone many different ways). I don’t believe I was charged a Sunday/weekend fee, unless that was worked into the overall cost (wasn’t a line item on invoice). He sent me a detailed summary and the video of the pipe scope afterwards. This was my first time having a professional come in for an issue since buying my house. Overall 10/10 experience. Thanks, Kris!!

Noah and Brian were professional from start to finish. They arrived ready to work, explained things clearly, and fixed it without any runaround. They were efficient, respectful of the space, and the drain has worked perfectly since they left. Fantastic job — I'd gladly call them again.

Experience and professional staff. They communicate decisively on what needs to be done and what the outcomes might be. When they say they're going to do something they do it. On time. In the end I always get peace of mind.

Today I had an emergency plumbing issue and I called Mr. Rooter’s this morning. They had previously helped with a blockage issue. I want to thank Kris, Noah, and the rest of the Mr. Rooter’s team for their prompt response to remedy the situation. Their professionalism and understanding, coupled with them backing up their 3 month warranty makes me happy I chose them! I highly recommend using Mr. Rooter’s if you have any plumbing issues. Thanks again Noah and Kris! Sean

Noah did an amazing job; I felt very respected and was very tidy! It is very rare that you call someone for help, and the helper doesn’t leave a trace. I noticed this from the beginning of the job till the end. My dog is a little shy but Noah was so kind and gentle with her that she also didn’t struggle with having someone new in the house. Overall, great experience, called in the morning and had someone able to return my call/ have someone come by to look/ fix the problem. Thank you!

The booking process was incredibly easy and the technicians that came did an excellent job explaining and repairing my issue. The entire visit was quick and painless and most of the credit for that goes to the good communication from the lead technician Tyler. He knew his stuff and did a good job explaining the process. The billing was transparent and up front. I would definitely call Mr. Rooter again.

I phoned Mr Rooter Plumbing as our kitchen sink was plugged and I tried to fix it myself but no avail. An appointment was scheduled for next day ( Friday). Two Techs arrived as scheduled and at first my wife wanted them to try to release the clog in the elbow joint first after an estimate was given to fix the problem. The techs did as she said but it didn’t solve the issue so she gave them the go ahead and to use the hydro method to clean and clear the line. They did and we saw that it was an accumulation of grease and hair that was the problem and after they finished everything was perfect. The clogs were removed and everything was nice and dry with the dirty water taken outside and dispose of. We are very satisfied with the process and service. Thank you…

Thanks to the team at Mr. Rooter for helping us out with a grinder pump replacement issue. Chris and his team were extremely professional and even identified other potential issues unrelated to the task at hand. We appreciate you and they offer a military discount!

Frequently Asked Questions About Septic System Repair in Whites Lake, Nova Scotia

Become well-informed about septic system repairs by reading the answers to our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ below. To learn more about septic system repairs and other plumbing services, reach out to the team at Mr. Rooter Plumbing® in Whites Lake, Nova Scotia.

  • The costs associated with replacing a septic tank depend on where you live, your property, and even the septic system service providers you hire to complete the job. It’s not just your septic tank that factors into the cost; it’s also the additional parts, like pumps and septic lift stations, which have varying price tags. The amount you pay for septic system replacement is determined by the type of septic system your property needs, with some properties functioning well with conventional systems and others needing more technical secondary treatment systems. Consider the septic tank size your property needs since larger tanks often cost more to buy and install than smaller ones due to the need for more materials and labour.

  • You typically can’t expect to pay the same amount to repair a septic tank every time because many variables must be considered when calculating the costs. Repair costs by trusted service providers often reflect the seriousness of the septic tank issue, like serious cracks and collapsed drain fields versus basic blockages. Most plumbing service providers have varying fee structures and costs, which means that they are responsible for how much you can expect your septic tank repairs to cost. Depending on the service provider and labour content of the job, expect to pay more for septic tank repairs when your tank is deeply buried, has obstacles, or is in a hard-to-reach location.

  • Whether or not a septic tank is well-maintained over its lifetime contributes to how long it lasts before you need to consider replacing it. The average expected lifespan of a septic tank in Canada is around 20 or 30 years, but don’t be surprised if your well-maintained one in good soil lasts longer, as some last for 40 or 50 years. Not all septic tank materials are made equal, with steel tanks typically succumbing to rust decades before concrete septic tanks begin to fail their owners. The soil type in your area, such as non-acidic or highly acidic, as well as the height of your water table, factor into just how many years your septic system will last before you need to replace it.

  • If you’re struggling to find your septic tank, look for signs of ground disturbance, a depression in the ground, or healthy plants that look out of place. In some cases, you can discover your septic tank’s location by checking property inspection records after purchasing your property — as well as reviewing information from the former owner. If you have access to the building plans for your property, you may find the septic tank’s location marked on them to make it easy for future owners to find. When you’ve been unable to find your septic system or tank, call a trusted septic system service provider who can locate it using metal probes and other tools.

  • Call a septic system service provider as soon as your septic tank collapses since they can pose a health and safety risk with sewage leaks. Refrain from using your septic tank as soon as you know it has collapsed because it’s likely unable to perform its job of taking care of wastewater treatment and disposal properly. You won’t want to wait to address a collapsed septic tank since they can cause property hazards like sinkholes, which are dangerous to your home’s occupants. You can be at risk of getting into trouble with your local municipality if you use a collapsed septic tank – there are many rules and regulations in place for their use and care.

  • Keep your septic tank in great health by requesting routine septic tank pumping from a trusted professional who can also look out for any potential problems. Using septic system-safe products and not flushing and pouring anything potentially harmful down your drains contributes to your septic system’s overall health and lifespan. To ensure your septic system functions well, don’t overlook drain field maintenance – steer clear of planting trees, parking, or driving on it, and refrain from installing sump pumps nearby. Keep your septic system healthy by managing your water usage; inspect your toilets, faucets, and fixtures for leaks to avoid overwhelming your drain field with excess water.

  • As soon as you know you need to repair your septic tank, hire a trusted plumbing service provider rather than doing them yourself to ensure the job is done properly. Problems related to the inlet and outlet baffles of your septic tank can often be resolved by replacing the outlet baffle, which involves inserting a new plastic sanitary tee. You can replace components in septic systems with the help of experts to avoid total system replacement, like pumps, drain fields, plumbing components, filters, and alarms. As you want to be sure that you’ve solved any septic system-related problems you’ve been having, it’s important to perform septic system testing after carrying out repairs.

  • If your septic tank has been damaged in a fire, a weather event, by a falling object, or similar, you may receive coverage for repairs through your home insurance provider in Canada. In several situations, homeowner insurance policies cover septic tank repairs up to a certain percentage of your total home limit, meaning you’ll have a specific sum of money to repair your septic system with. Not all septic tank damage is covered by insurance, so review your policy documents and contact your homeowners’ insurance company to find out whether yours is. While insurance companies cover many cases of accidental damage, they don’t typically cover damage caused by human error, neglect, and poor maintenance, like driving over your tank, not pumping it, and not having adequate drainage.

  • Out of all the issues that property owners encounter with their septic systems and tanks, blockages and drain field clogs are undoubtedly among the most common. If you have noticed cracks and leaks in your septic tank, you’re not alone — this issue is regularly encountered by property owners in Canada when their tanks succumb to old age, are the victims of ground movement, or experience pressure. Not maintaining your septic tank through regular pumping could result in issues like slow drains, wastewater backing up into your home, and unpleasant odours in your yard. A poorly installed drain field and root intrusion from nearby trees can both be cause for concern and result in issues for septic tanks that you need to address.

  • Talk to your local plumbing service provider about performing septic tank crack repairs with epoxy sealant products when the cracks are minor. Whether or not you can repair a cracked septic tank is determined by the septic tank materials you’re working with, like fibreglass, plastic, and concrete. It’s not always easy for property owners to know whether their cracked septic tanks are salvageable, so contact a trusted septic system expert in your area for help. Some septic tank cracks can become large and unstable, making septic tank replacement through a trusted septic tank service provider a better option in terms of safety and cost-effectiveness.
