Drain Cleaning in Lethbridge, AB

We handle all residential drain types in Lethbridge, AB:

• Bathroom drains: shower, bathtub, and sink drains clogged by hair, soap, and toothpaste
• Kitchen drains: grease, food scraps, and soap buildup are common culprits
• Sewer drains: main sewer line blockages that affect your entire home
• Utility room and floor drains: often overlooked until they back up or flood

The most common causes we see in Lethbridge, AB homes include:

• Hair and soap scum in bathroom drains
• Grease, fats, and oils poured down kitchen sinks (they harden inside pipes)
• Foreign objects accidentally flushed or dropped into drains
• Tree root intrusion into underground sewer lines
• Mineral buildup from hard water is common in Southern Alberta
• Seasonal debris is carried by Southern Alberta's harsh winters and spring runoffs

We strongly advise against it. Store-bought chemical drain cleaners, including foaming or thrift-style products, only provide temporary relief and can actually corrode your pipes over time. They're also a health and safety hazard. Our Lethbridge drain cleaning experts use safe, effective methods such as hydro jetting and mechanical augering to fully eliminate clogs without damaging your plumbing.

While a plunger can help with minor surface-level clogs, we recommend calling a professional for any persistent clogs. DIY attempts with store-bought augers risk scratching or cracking your pipes and fixtures. Our licensed plumbers have the tools and training to safely clear even the toughest clogs in Lethbridge homes without causing additional damage.

Most Lethbridge homeowners benefit from a professional drain cleaning at least once a year. If your home has older plumbing, a large household, or you've had recurring clogs, we may recommend more frequent service. Annual maintenance helps prevent major blockages and extends the life of your plumbing system.

A few simple habits go a long way:

• Never pour grease, oil, or fats down the kitchen sink
• Install drain strainers in showers and bathtub drains to catch hair
• Run hot water after brushing your teeth or washing dishes
• Avoid flushing anything other than toilet paper
• Schedule annual plumbing checkups to catch buildup before it becomes a blockage

HydroScrub^® Jetting uses high-pressure water — up to 4,000 psi — to blast through clogs and flush debris from your drain lines. It's safe for most residential pipe materials and is one of the most thorough cleaning methods available. Before jetting, we perform a video inspection to confirm your pipes are in good enough condition for the process.

Routine drain cleaning and video inspections don't require a permit. However, any structural repairs or pipe replacements, such as sewer line relining or trenchless replacement, require a plumbing permit issued by the appropriate local building department. Our team is fully familiar with Alberta Safety Codes Council requirements and will handle the permitting process as needed.

Yes. Every plumber on our team is fully licensed and follows all provincial guidelines set by the Alberta Safety Codes Council. We take code compliance seriously on every job — whether it's a routine drain cleaning or a major sewer repair in Lethbridge.

Drain cleaning costs in Lethbridge, AB vary based on the type of drain, the severity of the clog, and the time required to complete the work. Simple clogs can often be resolved in under an hour, while more complex blockages, such as main sewer line issues, may take longer. We always provide a flat-rate, upfront estimate after our initial inspection so you know exactly what to expect before we begin.

Yes, and it's one of the more common issues we see in homes in Southern Alberta. Lethbridge's water supply carries a significant mineral load, and over time, those calcium and magnesium deposits don't just affect your kettle or showerhead. They build up on the interior walls of your drain lines and supply pipes, narrowing the flow path gradually enough that most homeowners don't notice until pressure drops noticeably or a drain starts backing up for no obvious reason.

Kitchen drains are especially susceptible. The combination of grease and mineral scale creates a thick, stubborn lining inside the pipe that a standard snake won't fully remove. HydroScrub^® Jetting scours the entire pipe wall, which is why it delivers better long-term results than snaking alone for mineral-affected lines. If your showerheads are clogging up with white buildup and your drains seem slower than they used to be, hard water is likely contributing to both problems. Your plumber can assess how much scale has accumulated during a video camera inspection and recommend the right cleaning method.

They can, and Lethbridge homeowners are in a particularly tricky spot because of how fast those temperature swings happen. A Chinook can push temperatures from well below freezing to above zero within hours. Pipes in unheated areas like attached garages, crawl spaces, and along exterior walls that were borderline frozen can thaw quickly, and if there's any crack from ice expansion that went undetected, that's when it shows up. Drain lines running through cold zones can develop sags or partial freezes that don't fully clear even after the warm spell passes.

Your plumbing vent stack is another Chinook-related concern. In deep cold, warm moist air from your drain system can freeze at the roof termination and seal the vent shut. A blocked vent causes slow drains throughout the house and gurgling sounds from multiple fixtures, symptoms that look like a clog but aren't one. If you've had those symptoms appear and disappear with the weather, a frozen vent is worth investigating before any drain cleaning work begins.

A recurring backup in the same location almost always points to a structural problem, not just a buildup issue. Hair and grease blockages don't discriminate. They can form anywhere along a drain line. But a clog that keeps returning to the same spot usually means there's a partial obstruction that never fully clears, a belly in the line where water sits and debris collects, or root intrusion that grows back after each clearing.

In older Lethbridge neighbourhoods, tree roots commonly grow into underground sewer lines and cause recurring blockages. Clearing the clog without inspecting the line just buys you a few weeks. A video camera inspection shows exactly what's happening inside the pipe and at what depth, so you get a real answer rather than another temporary fix. Depending on what we find, the solution might be targeted hydro jetting, a pipe liner, or a localized repair in the problem section.

Multiple slow drains are a different problem from a single slow drain, and they shouldn't be treated the same way. When one sink backs up, you're dealing with a fixture-level clog in the trap or the branch line. When your kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and laundry drain all slow down at the same time, the blockage is almost certainly in the main sewer line or the main drain stack, which all of those fixtures share.

Lethbridge's combined and sanitary sewer infrastructure can experience surcharging during intense summer storm events, when heavy rainfall overwhelms the system's capacity and forces water back upstream through residential connections. If you see this happen after a heavy rain, contact us right away and stop the running water in the house. Every flush adds to the pressure. If the slowdown isn't weather-related, your main line likely has a blockage from roots, grease buildup, or a damaged section that needs a camera inspection to properly diagnose the issue. Don't pour chemical cleaners into multiple drains, hoping one of them reaches the problem. They won't, and they can damage your pipes in the process. Call us, and we'll find the actual cause before recommending a fix.

The line is split at the property line. You own the sewer service line from your house to the property line, and the City of Lethbridge owns the section from there out to the main under the street. If it's a clog or break on your side, you're responsible for fixing it.

The City's replacement process is clear: the City covers the work and cost from the property line to the street, while the contractor the homeowner hires handles the house-to-property-line section at the homeowner's expense, and doing both at once saves money. Property lines vary from lot to lot, so 311 can confirm yours.

Before anyone digs, we run a camera through the line and measure exactly where the problem sits. That footage usually settles the question in a few minutes. It's also what you'll want in hand when you call the City.

Most of the time it's a dry trap. Every floor drain has a U-shaped trap that holds water to seal out sewer gas. Once that water evaporates, gas rises straight into the basement. No clog needed.

Lethbridge is hard on those seals. Based on Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991 to 2020 climate normals, the city averages about 372.5 mm of precipitation a year, which puts it among the driest cities in the country. Add furnace-dried winter air, and a trap can go dry in weeks. We find utility room drains and basement showers empty out most often because nobody uses them.

Pour a litre of water down each floor drain every few weeks. A spoonful of mineral oil on top slows evaporation. If the smell returns within a day or two, the trap could be cracked or the vent could be blocked, and that deserves a closer look.

On any older home, absolutely. A standard home inspection checks fixtures and visible piping but rarely looks inside the buried sewer line, which is often the costliest single repair a new owner faces. A camera inspection shows pipe material, roots, sags, and cracks before you commit.

Many older Lethbridge homes still have clay tile or cast iron running to the street. Both can last decades. Then they start failing at the joints, and that's where roots get in. Newer subdivisions mostly have plastic pipe, but settling soil can still create low spots that hold debris.

Book the inspection during your conditions period, not after possession. If we find a problem, you'll have video and a written estimate to take back to the seller. That's real negotiating leverage, and it's a lot better than discovering the issue the first time the basement drain backs up.

Not by default. Standard home insurance policies in Canada don't include sewer backup coverage, but you can add it as an optional endorsement. Without it, you usually pay out of pocket for cleanup, flooring, drywall, and damaged belongings in a finished basement.

Call your broker and ask two questions. Do I have the endorsement? What's the limit? A low cap disappears fast once a finished basement needs new flooring and drywall. Some insurers also offer a better rate, or ask for one before renewing, if the home has a backwater valve.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada recommends keeping indoor floor drains clear and, where possible, installing a backwater valve. In Lethbridge, the summer storms that surcharge the sewer system are exactly the events that make both worth having. A backwater valve goes on the main line in the basement and is permitted work, so plan on a plumbing permit and an inspection.

A cleanout is a capped access pipe on your main sewer line. It's usually near the basement floor or outside close to the foundation. It gives a plumber direct access to the main line without pulling a toilet or forcing a cable through a small fixture drain.

Access matters more than most homeowners realize. If you want the City of Lethbridge to video-inspect your line to see whether it needs replacing, a cleanout has to be accessible. Direct access also makes our camera work and HydroScrub® Jetting faster and more thorough, since we can reach the full length of the line.

In finished basements, we often find the cleanout hidden behind drywall, under carpet, or buried behind storage shelves. Find yours now, while nothing's backing up. If it's sealed in, an access panel is a small job that saves a lot of time during an actual backup.
