Vancouver, BC (August 14, 2009) – Do you hear strange noises coming from your plumbing? Unidentifiable gurgles in the sink drain or running water in the bathing room when no one is there?
Mary Kennedy Thomspson, President of the Mr. Rooter® Corporation, explains the mystery behind some of the most common plumbing sounds.
Water running for no reason is usually a problem with the toilet. To silence the sound of running water, you may need to replace the toilet flapper or all of the internal working parts.
Hearing a thump in the wall when the water turns off can be an annoying sound and may indicate a plumbing problem. “When a valve is closed quickly and the water stops hard you can hear this sound," says Kennedy Thompson. It is common with washing machines and some older dishwashers that have electric shut-off valves. "When they turn off the water, the flow is immediately shut off." The installation of a charged air cylinder known as a shock absorber or water-hammer arrestor, which acts as a cushion for the water pressure, will fix the problem.
And hearing your drain gurgling can indicate a blockage of air in the drain, typically caused by a clog. Removing the clog should fix the problem.
To explain and correct any mysterious plumbing noises you hear in your home, please call your local Mr. Rooter Plumbing franchisee.
